Enclosure 6.

REC

REG 1 MAY 18)

I remember perfectly well the circumstances in connection with the subject of the Postage Stamps which were miss-

-ing in 1904.

-

It was at one of the monthly checkings of the Stock of Stamps kept in the Postmaster-General's safe usuelly held at the beginning of each month when the decovery was made that the Stock in band, as compared with the entries in the Stock book was short by 50 sheets of 4 cent stamps, valued 8480.

The stock in charge of the Compradore was

thereupon checked but no excess was found.

Enquiries were then made of the British Postal Agencies (and also I believe of the Fleet Postmaster) but all replied that no excess sheets had been received.

It was then suggested that an error may have been made by the Crow Agents in view of the fact that they had advised in their Invoice dated 8th. July, 1903, supplying this Department with "5,055" sheets of 4 conte stamps, whereas the packing certificate emlosed in the case called for "5,005" sheets only. The matter was referred to the then Auditor (Mr. Nicolle) who pointed out that the higher figure was a clerical error.

His Excellency the Governor thereupon decided that the Postmaster-General was responsible for the loss which was duly made good by Mr. Ross in five monthly instalments.

(8d.) A. J. Reed,

Accountant, G.P.C.
